Abstract Outlines proposed program of research to investigate nature of atmospheric and oceanic linkages between climate of Antarctic and rest of Earth system, and mechanisms involved, with particular reference to Holocene and 100 years in the future. Major themes of research will be decadal time scale variability in Antarctic climate system, including ocean-atmosphere coupling, roles played by radiative processes and El Nino- Southern Oscillation in modulating Antarctic climate; investigation of global and regional climate signals in ice cores to establish better quantitative relationships between ice core data and measures of tropical, mid- and high latitude climate variability; natural and anthropogenic forcing on Antarctic climate system, including production of regional-scale estimates of expected climate change over Antarctica during next 100 years; and export of Antarctic climate signals, in relation to means by which climate changes in Antarctic can influence conditions at more northerly latitudes. Program will contribute to 2007-08 International Polar Year.
