Abstract The state of research into the climate system of the Antarctic Peninsula region is described. The regional climate warming observed for the last decades is the most distinctive peculiarity with a maximum rate at the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Academic Vernadsky", and it is observed during nearly the same time in extratropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere--in Arctic, Siberia, Eastern Europe. Examples of the coupled behavior of components of the regional climate system under conditions of warming are given, and the perspectives for the research in frames of International Polar Year 2007-09 are presented.
