Abstract Antarctic ice shelves are key regions for understanding the mechanism of climate change in Antarctica and predicting future global climate changes. This paper summarizes research on Antarctic ice shelves performed since the 20th century, including the interaction between the ice shelf and the ocean, the conformation and characteristics of ice shelves and interior structure, the sedimentary characteristics of cores from the seabed, and the evolution of the marine ecosystem near ice shelves. Advances in Chinese research on the Amery Ice Shelf are also introduced. Based on the Antarctica program during IPY 2007/2008, the Chinese research plan for the Amery Ice Shelf is presented.
