Abstract Describes proposed Subglacial Antarctic Lake Environments research group to foster international cooperation and collaboration, including scientific and technological issues; data and sample access, management and sharing; and advice on minimization of contamination for entry, sensor package deployments, and sampling technologies. Main scientific aims include understanding formation and evolution of subglacial lake processes and environments; determining origins, evolution and maintenance of life in subglacial lake environments; and understanding limnology and paleoclimate history recorded in subglacial lake sediments. Appendices present proposals for Subglacial Antarctic Lake Environments- UNified International Team for Exploration and Discovery (SALE-UNITED) in IPY 2007-09; and scientific and technological timelines and milestones of SALE program.
