Abstract Describes SCAR research program on Antarctica and the Global Climate System (AGCS), focusing on atmospheric and oceanic linkages between climate of Antarctic and rest of Earth system, and mechanisms involved, using data from ice cores, satellite observation, output of global and regional coupled atmosphere-ocean climate models and in-situ meteorological, atmospheric and oceanic data. Four closely linked themes deal with decadal time scale variability in Antarctic climate system; global and regional climate signals in ice cores; natural and anthropogenic forcing on Antarctic climate system; and export of Antarctic climate signals. Includes brief notes on contributions of AGCS to 2007-2008 International Polar Year, expected overall outcomes, measures of progress, and outreach work.
