Abstract Briefly describes IPY umbrella research program MERGE, which examines responses of terrestrial, lacustrine and supraglacial polar ecosystems to climate changes such as global warming. Key questions relate to diversity and biogeography, food webs and ecosystem evolution, and linkages between biological, chemical and physical processes in supraglacial biome of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
