Abstract Provides an overview of the IPY Project entitled PLATES & GATES which is studying the geometry of ocean gateways and basins and their impact on climate change. PLATES & GATES is focused on the Cenozoic and Mesozoic and on the transition from greenhouse to icehouse. Geophysical surveys and sedimentary sampling activities are being conducted at sites in the Arctic, Antarctic and Southern Ocean with the objective of reconstructing past plate motions and paleocurrent systems.
