Abstract This work is a report to the French National Assembly on "France's position with regard to the international issues surrounding polar research: the case of Antarctica." Sections of the report include: the Polar regions, an urgent need for protection; the Poles, their key role in understanding climate change; France's first- class biological research; observing the Earth, observing the universe; preparing the space missions in Antarctica; France's presence in the polar regions; the reporter's conclusions and proposals.
