Abstract Provides overview of joint scientific collaboration between universities of Waikato and Minnesota to assess non-biological and biological causes of deterioration in wooden huts and associated artefacts from early 20th century Antarctic expeditions on Ross Island. Includes notes on wind and salt erosion; wood decaying microorganisms and their cold avoidance strategies; and contamination by hazardous substances.
