Abstract Describes conditions for several parties of fewer than five members overwintering in Antarctica and at sub- Antarctic Macquarie Island, from 1913-15 Commonwealth Meteorological Expedition to early 1980s. Includes Japanese Mizuho Station from 1976 to early 1980s; Siple Station in 1970s; Vanda Station in 1969; Australian Amery Ice Shelf Project in 1968 which wintered in fibreglass caravans; South African inland stations Borga and Grunehogna; South Ice Station used during 1955-58 Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition; Charcot Station in Adelie Land in 1950s; Bolling Advance Weather Base occupied by Byrd during winter 1934; Clifford House on Signy Island in late 1940s; hut at Fossil Bluff in 1960s; and Ryvingen, inland base of 1979-82 Transglobe Expedition.
