Abstract Overview of research at geothermal areas of Rallier du Baty Peninsula and Val Travers on sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands, and at Plage du Feu de Joie on Ile St. Paul. Analysis of geochemistry of hot springs and fumaroles has contributed to precise characterization of various biotopes in which extremophilic microbial communities are thriving, and new species or genera of cultivable thermophiles have been recovered, extending knowledge of extremophilic microbial diversity.
