Abstract Report prepared for consideration by Australian Department of Environment and Water Resources in relation to renewing exemption of sub-Antarctic fishery from export controls. Notes changes in fishery since declaration of Marine Reserve in waters around Heard Island and McDonald Islands in 2002, including bycatch prevention measures on longline fishing vessels; Marine Stewardship Council certification system for mackerel icefish; illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; joint Australia/France research into Patagonian toothfish; trials of pot fishing operations; improved seabird mitigation measures in mid-water trawl operation; new stock assessment method; and study on benthic impacts of demersal fishing gear in Southern Ocean.
